Children who have disabilities or conditions that make seeing the dentist harder than usual can be seen by our office. We welcome pediatric special needs patients. We understand the needs that they have and our dental team has spent time learning about how to treat patients who need more specialized care.

For our special needs patients or children who present with dental fear, we offer nitrous oxide. Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a safe way to ease a patient’s fears, helping the child relax. Trying to perform a procedure on a child who is scared is difficult. The adrenaline running through their system makes it harder for them to get numb. With nitrous oxide, the child is relaxed and we can comfortably perform the dental procedure.

Besides nitrous oxide, we also offer other types of conscious sedation. These can be done via oral medication or intravenously. Sedation is a great option for those who have dental fears, children who have a lot of restorative needs (lots of fillings are needed), those who need extractions, and special needs patients. It helps keep the child’s nerves at ease and helps us get a lot done in a shorter period of time.

Even with the use of nitrous gas or moderate sedation, some children are unable to sit in the dental chair and have their dental work completed. This can either be due to medical conditions, heavy amounts of decay, or young age. In these cases, the use of general anesthesia is an option to perform the needed dental work. At Adaven, we are unique because we have a large surgical suite in our office that we use to perform dental work under general anesthesia. The surgical suite is designed with space for an anesthesiologist and all his/her equipment, as well as with all the dental equipment and instruments needed for treatment.
If you have questions about any of the different ways we can help make your child more comfortable please feel free to call our office. We would be happy to discuss the different options with you.

Many years ago, kids who had large cavities in their back molars or front teeth, where restored with silver caps. With today’s technology, we are able to provide white esthetic crowns instead of a silver cap. This is a good option for those who wish to not have the silver color in their child’s mouth. The crowns are completely white, and when done properly, help maintain a natural look and color to your child’s smile.

Some children may not allow us to have their active tooth decay restored due to age or medical conditions. In cases like this, we can use silver diamine fluoride (SDF) to slow or stop the decay. SDF can buy us time until your child is old enough to complete the dental work. Often times, we place the SDF and it will stop the decay completely. Cavities that have had SDF placed will need to be monitored to ensure the progression of the cavity has stopped.
